Bonus Sunday post!

I went to Southern Connecticut State University. One day in freshman year I had to go see this guy Bill O’Dowd, who turned out to be a nice guy. After our meeting I connected with his admin, Debbie Twigg (who’s on here)

She was gorgeous. She was blonde, blue eyes. She dressed nice. She had nice legs. She had a tanned stomach. She wore pink flats. And this was the day before spring break.

The whole week of spring break, I thought of her. She was one of these girls that make your heart race. That you’re nervous because you like them, and you don’t know how it will go; but you hope it will go your way.

So it was before an 11am class when we went back I had that I saw her in all her beauty and glory. My heart was racing. I introduced myself. She was very kind. I asked her what her name was ‘Debbie,’ she said. ‘What’s yours?’ Pete, I said. And we talked. And she was kind.

So many times you see pretty ladies who are dull, or mean. And I can tell you it gets real old, real fast; and a lot faster than you think. The girl from Athens, GA who didn’t know REM. But Debbie was sweet, Debbie was kind, Debbie was beautiful.

And here it is, almost 40 years later, and we’re still friends.

I have often said that were I to do it over again, I would have picked a school other than Southern to go to. I was accepted to Quinnipiac and Bryant but passed on both because I didn’t think I could make it work. How my life would have turned out, is a fool’s errand. All I know is I met girls like Debbie, who made me feel good about myself, and helped me to think ‘I must be doing something right.’

Debbie: if you’re reading this. Thank you. I loved you then, I love you now.
